Thanks to Dima for very good comments. Soledar is instructive to illustrate how desperately weak Ukraine has become. Soledar is one of Ukraine’s most strongly defended positions. Not only Soledar itself, but everything in a wide circle around Soledar was heavily fortified by Ukraine. All Ukraine’s outer defenses of Soledar are gone. Gone. Today, Russia is attacking Soledar both North, Center, and South. Soledar is already semi-encircled. Then, for example, why did Ukraine lose the block in the North of Soledar? Was it just that the Ukrainians forgot about it? No. It is because Russia is one by one destroying Ukraine’s best forces, and Ukraine has run out of forces to defend such a vital position i such a strategic town. Russia destroyed most of Ukraine’s 128th Mountain Assault Brigade leaving the North of Soledar vulnerable – and it is very important to note, that Ukraine had already run out of back-up forces to position North of Soledar which could step in instead of the 128th. Russia has artillery. A lot. And when concentrated, it destroys also Soviet era department buildings. The Russian success in the North of Soledar was inevitable. Dima is also right that the question is not whether Soledar will fall to Russia, because it will – and soon. Dima is right that the question is for Russia how to take Soledar with a minimum of losses. Because contrary to Ukraine, Russia does value the lives of its soldiers. As Dima also rightly points out, before advancing North around Bakhmut, Russia must do some clearing operations North of Soledar, and this includes Vesele. Russia needs to clear out the area North of Soledar to have its right-hand flank protected when advancing further around Soledar from the north-side. Dima is also right, that Bakhmut will fall too. The Ukrainian reinforcements expected in March 2023 will have no effective power – because Ukraine is already too weak and is already on the verge of a break-down soon.

Labour have got nothing to do! They are the perpetual opposition so they are bound to want to encourage and lead the strikers!

Planning for an ageing pop, uation should have happened decades ago but instead successive governments preferred to kick the can down the road. It never needed a crystal ball as we all started live longer due to improved health care. Though I do believe we need to have honest dialogue about realistic quality of life and expectations.
